Worlds oldest person Besse Cooper dies at 116 in Georgia

Besse CooperThe world’s oldest woman died on Tuesday afternoon at the age of 116 in Monroe, Georgia, after having had her hair done in the morning by a stylist at the centre where she was living.

Besse Cooper was born in Sullivan County, Tennessee, on August 26, 1896. She moved to Georgia where she found a better paid job after studying education. She got married to Luther Cooper in 1924 but never remarried when he died in 1963. 

Cooper “was very intelligent” said her son 77-year-old son Sidney Cooper. She also loved to watch the news and “loved to read” he told the CNN. The Sullivan County resident made it into the Guinness World Records book as the oldest living human in January 2011.

The oldest person to have ever lived was a woman called Jeanne Louis Clement who lived in France. She died at the age of 122 in 1997.
