Russia’s defense minister Anatoly Serdyukov was forced to step down earlier this month amid corruption allegations. That was the official reason of Serdyukov’s resignation but it is now claimed that the actual reason to force Serdyukov out of office was an affair with a female employee.
Serdyukov’s dismissal looked like a most unusual move for Putin, who has a reputation of a leader who “never gives in his own”, corrupt or not. A possible explanation that the Russian rumor mill is suggesting: in the adultery scenario, Putin’s loyalty would have been to the father-in-law.
The New Yorker reports that Serdyukov’s father-in-law is a member of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle and the main force behind the former minister’s success in the country’s furniture business. Serdyukov is estranged from his wife and Putin’s close ties with the woman’s father, whom he knows since working in the office of Saint Petersburg’s mayor in the 90s, forced him to resign.
The woman who sparked the investigation was also involved in a scandal that erupted 1999. At the time, state-run national television showed a naked man who “looked a lot like the prosecutor general” enjoying himself with two naked girls. One of the women is Evgenia Vasilieva and is rumored to be the one Mr Serdyukov fell for. Reports say she lives in an apartment worth $10 million ”filled with expensive jewelry and art masterpieces” and “is currently under house arrest.”
