Kimberly McCarthy will be executed by lethal injection at 6 p.m. local time at the state prison in Huntsville, Texas, next Tuesday. McCarthy will be the first woman to be executed in the United States since 2010. Capital punishment was reinstated by the Supreme Court in 1976 and twelve females have been sentenced to death since.
McCarthy has been convicted of the murder of her 71-year-old nextdoor neighbor Dorothy Booth in 1997. She was found guilty of stabbing Booth five times and stealing the woman’s diamond ring by cutting off her left ring finger. McCarthy is also believed to be responsible for the deaths of two more elderly women.
According to Attorney General’s summary, the convicted murderer killed the first woman with a meat tendinizer and the other one with a claw hammer. McCarthy was sentenced to death in 1998 and in 2002. Her conviction was confirmed in 2004 by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.
