Fidel CastroA few days after rumours started to circulate that he was on the verge of death, Cuban leader Fidel Castro paid visit to a top Venezuelan politician in a hotel in Havana on Saturday.

Venezuela’s ex Vice President Elia Jaua reportedly had a five hour meeting with Cuba’s former leader at the Hotel Nacional in Cuba’s capital and later told journalists that Castro looked well and “very lucid.”  Castro stepped down from power in  2006 when his brother Raul took over.

Bbc.co.uk reports:

The Venezuelan politician, who served as vice-president until elections earlier this month, also showed a photograph of the encounter. The last images of Mr Castro to be made public had been from March, when the Cuban ex-leader briefly met Pope Benedict during the pontiff’s visit to the Communist island.

Recent reports claimed that the ex-Cuban leader was close to death following an embolic strike that left him in a neurovegetative state. According to respected Venezuelan doctor José Marquina, Fidel Castro recognizes “absolutely no one” following the stroke.
