Chinese Army Base Unit ShanghaiIn a 12-storey building 40 minutes from Shanghai’s city centre a group of Chinese hackers have conducted more than 100 cyber-attacks on American government departments.

The building is the headquarters of People’s Liberation Army Unit 61398 where the hacking group called the Comment Crew – which consists of “thousands of people” – has reportedly breached the security of many global corporations, reports The Telegraph.

The building is off-limits but American authorities believe the locations is where the recent attacks on The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post were carried out.

Kevin Mandia, chief executive officer of information-security company Mandia and Corp. told The New York Times: ”Either they [the attacks] are coming from inside Unit 61398 or the people who run the most controlled, most monitored internet networks in the world are clueless about thousands of people generating attacks from this one neighborhood.”
