A British grandmother has been sentenced to death in Bali. Lindsay Sandiford, 56, was arrested at Bali airport with 4.8kg of cocaine in her suitcase in May last year. She told the court she was forced by a local gang into smuggling $2.5 million worth of the white powder in the country. If she hadn’t, Sandiford told the court the gang would have hurt her children.
Initially, prosecutors had sought to sentence the woman to 15 years in jail.
Sandford wept as the court read out the sentence but told lawyers she would appeal. The last time Bali executed a man was in 2008. The woman’s alleged accomplice, Julian Anthony Pounder, is expected to receive the verdict on Wednesday. Two British citizens and an Indian who took part in the bust have already been jailed.
