NEW YORK – NYC policeman Gilberto Valle, aka the “Cannibal Cop”, has been found guilty of plotting to kidnap and cannibalise more than 100 women. Valle, 28, was ”very emotional” and wept as the verdict was being read out loud before lunch on Tuesday. The jury, which consisted of six men and six women, spent 16 hous across four days deliberating, reports NY Daily News.
During the trial, the 28-year-old officer spoke about his fetish for cannibalism. He claimed he was just fantasizing in his online conversations and never harmed the women he said he wanted to kill. However, Kathleen Mangan, the officer’s estranged wife, testified against him and explained how in some of the emails she found, Valle had planned in detail her murder.
As the BBC reports, Ms Mangan said her ex-husband wanted to slit her throat and then kidnap and kill one of her friends. In another email, she said she read about Valle’s plans to rape two other women and roast another.
Julia Gatto, Valle’s lawyer, was quoted as saying: “The jury was unable to get past the thoughts. Obviously, the case involved thoughts that were unusual and bizarre and frankly very ugly.” She added: “It was an emotional and shocking moment for him.”
The verdict meant the end of Gatto’s career as a NYPD officer and he could be sentenced to life in prison on June 19. The now ex-NYPD officer was found guilty of conspiracy to kidnap and illegal use of the federal database. After the verdict was read, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said: “The Internet is a forum for the free exchange of ideas, but it does not confer immunity for plotting crimes and taking steps to carry out those crimes.”
