Officials in Chongqing, south west China, were forced to evacuate the local zoo after a lion and a lionness sneaked out of their cage. Police and snipers were called in and visitors forced to leave after the zoo keeper forgot to lock the animals’ cage.
As the Daily Mail reports, the lions escaped their enclosure around 8am and a few hours passed before both animals were recaptured. A zoo spokesman said: “‘We found the female first and subdued her with a tranquiliser gun but the male took longer to find and bring back.”
The lionness was captured within an hour, while it took a few more hours to catch the male. The spokesman for the zoo apologised for the scare. “You can’t blame the lions. It was human error and they naturally took advantage of it.”
