A Canadian academic is convincing students to eat their pickings because he believes mucose is beneficial for a person’s immune system.

Professor Scott Nappaer claims eating the mucose could boost a human’s immune system. He bases his theory on previous studies that claim that hygiene has led to an increase in allergies and diseases, reports The Daily Mail.

Professor Napper said:

All you would need is a group of volunteers. You would put some sort of molecule in all their noses, and for half of the group they would go about their normal business and for the other half of the group, they would pick their nose and eat it. Then you could look for immune responses against that molecule and if they’re higher in the booger-eaters, then that would validate the idea.

In the study the professor is proposing, the acadamic would divide a class into two. One half would heat their pickings whereas the other would be told not to.

Professor Tim Wadsworth collected data between 1993 and 2006 from the General Social Survey which was an opinion poll that monitored American society psyche since 1972. He said about his findings: ‘There’s an overall increase in the sense of wellbeing that comes with having sex more frequently, but there’s also this relative aspect to it. ‘Having more sex makes us happy, but thinking that we are having more sex than other people makes us even happier.’ He added: ‘There is plenty of evidence that information concerning sexual behaviour is learned through discussions within peer groups and friendship networks. I can’t think of a better explanation for why how much sex other people are having would influence a person’s happiness.’

The French professor spent 15 years analyzing the orientation of 130 pair of breasts with a ruler and caliper at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (University Hospital) in Besançon. The study isn’t over yet, but based on his preliminary findings, the professor from the University of Besançon said eveything women know about bras so far is a false myth.

“Medically, physiologically, anotmically – breasts gain no benefit from being denied gravity,” he said.

Capucine, a 28-year-old woman who took part in the study, was quoted as saying: “There are multiple benefits: I breathe more easily, I carry myself better, and I have less back pain.”

The women taking part in the research were not told that the three traits used to determine the attractiveness were height, shoulder-to-hip ratio and the size of the penis. The answers, which remained anonymous, revealed that the shoulder-to-hip ratio was the most important but penis size was almost as important.

Lead author Brian Mautz explained that the attractiveness of a figure increased regularly until the size of the penis reached 3 inches. The ratings kept growing, but not as much, after the three inches threshold.  “The results of the PNAS study (and our own penis size studies) are consistent with a mate-choice perspective,” Mautz said.

Interestingly, the size of a penis, along with its length and girth, was the most relevant trait of attractiveness in tall men. Probably because tall men need “a disproportionately larger penis” to be attractive.

A Japanese doctor claims men who are willing to shed a few pounds can do so by masturbating. Dr. Khideo Yamanaka argues that ejaculation burns calories and masturbating at least 5 times a day – or 100 times a month – can cheer men up, stimulate their brain cells and relieve them from stress.

Yamanaka is the director of the Toranomon-Hibiya clinic in Tokyo. He says men need to free themselves of 2 liters of semen in order to lose 2 kilos of body weight. In the second half of the 1800, a woman called Blanche Dumas became famous for a medical condition that baffled most doctors at the time: she had a third leg that gave her a wide waist. That wide waist contained two bladders, two bowels and two vaginas, writes Hypervocal.

As a result, her sexual drive was remarkably high and could best be satisfied by a man who could practice sexual intercourse with both vaginas.

Dumas found the man with the voracious sexual appetite during her stay in Paris. His name was Juan Baptista dos Santos and was originally from Portugal. He too had a third leg and he would tie it to his thigh to avoid tripping over. But Baptista was also endowed with a second penis.  So when the two met, it came natural to them to get in a relationship.

The affair Baptista and Dumas had was “well-publicized” in 19th century tabloids and their sex drive was twice as ferocious as that of a couple with a normal set of reproductive organs. According to a report publised in 1865, Baptista “used both penises during intercourse and, after finishing with one, he would continue with the other.”

A Norwegian aviation expert claims airline companies should start charging their clients based on how much they weigh. Dr Bharad P Bhatta‘s believes airlines should take a passenger’s weight into account when pricing their tickets because weight and space are the most important aspects of aviation, reports The Daily Mail.

Dr. Bhatta of the Sogn og Fjordane University College in Norway believes airlines should consider charging tickets according to the combined weight of a passenger and his/her luggage. Under the scheme, a person weighting 60 kg would pay half the ticket of a person weighing 120kg.

The expert also said airlines could charge ’overweight passengers’ an extra fee. Dr. Ian Yeoman, the editor for the Journal of Revenue and Pricing Management, said: “For airlines, every extra kilogram means more expensive jet fuel must be burned, which leads to CO2 emissions and financial cost.”

A University of Alberta voice coach is treating sore throats with sex toys. David Ley is a professor in the school’s drama department uses a small marital aid to ease tensions in the larynx of his actors and singers.

“I was in the middle of the store testing it on the throat of a friend,” he said.

The vibrator is the size of a computer mouse and releases vibrations “with a frequency between 100 and 120”. At 18, Hazel had a rude awakening to her condition when one of her ex-boyfriends told her she was a bit different. And indeed she is.

Rob Rhinehart came up with this idea because he did not want to cook anymore and he claimed that his all-in-one-drink saved him a lot of money and hours of cooking.

Apparently the yellowish drink even tastes good, this is what its inventor, Rob Rhinehart, said to the website vice.com: ‘I was home for Christmas and saw an elderly family friend get admitted to the hospital after losing an unhealthy amount of weight. He was losing strength in one of his arms and found it very difficult to cook. I started wondering why something as simple and important as food was still so inefficient, given how streamlined and optimised other modern things are. Usually, HIV positive infants are treated with one drug but this time doctors at the hospital in Mississipi used a potent three-drug infusion to eradicate the virus. Doctors believe their action destroyed the virus “before it could form hideouts in the body.”

Dr Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health said: “You could calll this about as close to a cure, if not a cure, that we’ve seen.” The baby is ”functionally cured”, meaning the virus hasn’t been completely wiped out, but she’s been off medication for over a year.

Dr Hannah Gay, of the University of Mississipi said: “We can’t promise to cure babies who are infected. We can promise to prevent the vast majority of transmissions if the moms are tested during every pregnancy. ” Every year between 300,000 and 400,000 children are born with HIV. More than 90% of HIV-positive newborns are in sub-Saharan Africa. In the US, babies born with HIV are less than 200.

Based on a survey men said they had sex 5.2. times a month while women 5.6 times a month.

However, the authors of the study warned against men hanging up their aprons because those who are lousy “could increase conflict in their marriage and lower their wives’ marital satisfaction.”

The experiments came to a halt after the news of the researches being carried out caused outcry. But after a year-long moratorium 40 scientists wrote a letter that was published on Wednesday in the journals Science and Nature saying the studies on the virus will resume now that most countries have put in place a new set of rules.

However, the research won’t rely on funds granted by the United States because they still haven’t relased new guidelines.

During a telephone news conference on Wednesday, Ron Fouchier, a virologist who conducted some of the flu experiments at Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands, said the scientists were lifting the moratorium without waiting for guidelines from the United States. “How long do you want us to wait?” Dr. Fouchier asked. “If this was the Netherlands, would the U.S. wait? Should all countries really wait for the U.S., and why?”

The bird flu virus is called H5N1 and it is believed to be deadly if it comes in contact with humans. So far, a research conducted on ferrets found that the virus does not become viral but the altered version of the virus can infect ferrets and spread itself through the air.

Two years after the disaster at the Fukushima Daichi nuclear plant, a fish called ‘Mike the Murasoi’ was caught on Friday. TEPCO caught the fish on January 18 and found it had 254,000 becquerels per kilogram which makes it the most radioactive fish ever. That’s 2,500 times more than the 100 bequerels pre kilogram limit imposed by Japan’s government.  The fish was caught near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. The Japanese government plans to install nets 20kms around the Fukushima Daichi plant to curb fish contamination.

Previous research proved that men find slimmer women more attractive, and this could be due to the fact that men tend to link health issues with people being overweight. The data have been gathered in a study carried out using a questionnaire called “The international Index of Erectile Function”.

Researcher Stuart Brody said: ‘The most compelling explanation was that slimmer women are, on average, more sexually attractive to men (resulting in more frequent sex, stronger erections, and greater satisfaction). This is not surprising, given evolutionary selection pressures, because accumulation of excess body fat, especially abdominally, is associated with elevated risk of metabolic,

Philip Davis, an English professor who took part in the research, told The Daily Mail:

Serious literature acts like a rocket-booster to the brain. The research shows the power of literature to shift mental pathways, to create new thoughts, shapes and connections in the young and the staid alike.’

Thirty volunteers took part in the study and the line from King Lear: ‘ A father and a gracious aged man: him have you madded’ sparked more brain activity than when reading the simpler version. The unfamiliar use of the word ‘mad’ had forced readers to concentrate more.

The study then went on to analyze the the effect of poetry. Volunteers were given four lines from a William Wordsworth poem. The Daily Mail reports:

Volunteers’ brains were scanned while reading four lines by Wordsworth:  She lived unknown and few could know, when Lucy ceased to be. But she is in her grave and oh, the difference to me. The first version caused a greater degree of brain activity, lighting up not only the left part of the brain concerned with language, but also the right hemisphere that relates to autobiographical memory and emotion.

It’s likely a combination of factors, from a U.S. reliance on cars that keeps us from exercising enough, to a love of fast foods, to rejection of being told what to do.

Studies have found that the jellyfish adapts to pretty much any environment and reverses its aging process “by environmental stress or physical assualt.” What is still not known is how these tiny organisms suddenly manage to become younger.

The genus, it turns out, is extraordinarily difficult to culture in a laboratory. It requires close attention and an enormous amount of repetitive, tedious labor; even then, it is under only certain favorable conditions, most of which are still unknown to biologists, that a Turritopsis will produce offspring.

The Swedish experts found that being thin is as hazardous to one’s life expectancy as to being fat. They based their studies on the assumption that muscle strenght is tied with life expectancy and analyzed the lifestyle of a million teenagers over 24 years, reports the BBC.

The study found that teenagers between 16 and 19 years of age had shorter life expectancies and were more at risk of dying before they turn 50. The boys who had more muscles, even if overweight, had 20-35% less chances of dying from heart diseases and less at risk of depression.

Neuroscientists at the University analyzed his brain through wired sensors and found that the level of the man’s gamma waves had never been seen before in any other participant in the study. The waves they analyzed are those linked to consciousness, attention, learning and memory, reports Ny Daily News.

According to the study, the man’s left prefrontal cortex is far more active than his right part. Rats which are resistant to the poison are fattened up by the bait. Those that survive then mate with other resistant rats, allowing a generation of rats resistant to existing poisons to build up. Mutations have previously been found in many parts of the UK but the Huddersfield University study is the first time the extent of resistance has been measured in the West.

The animal are beleived to have developed a resistance to the poison because “some pest control companies are still using the same rodenticides.” It is also feared that the pesticide called Bromadiolone and Difenacoum are being passed on to animals that eat rats. The study is half way through but scientists are warning that by the time the research is over, rats in Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Bristol will have developed a resistance to poison.

A 21-year-old Brazilian man suffers from a rare medical condition that makes his scalp look like his brain, NBC News reports. The condition is known as ‘cutis verticis gyrata’ and the photo was published in the New England Journal of Medicine by two Brazilian doctors who wrote an article about the man’s folded brain.  The condition in itself isn’t malign but it is associated with cognitive disability.

None of those deceased had reached the age of life expectancy. Third, having participated in inpatient alcohol-dependent treatment was not related with longer survival compared to not having taken part in treatment, meaning that it did not seem to have a sufficient protective effect against premature death.”

An Indian man who has lived almost all of his life with no face fears he has passed his condition onto the child his wife will give birth to in a few months. Mohammed Latif Khatana, 32, was born with a lump on his face that thorughout the years grew into huge creases that covers the man’s eyes. Because of his condition, he cannot see and so he’s praying his son won’t have to go through his same sufferings.

Latif, who is the youngest of five siblings, told The Sun that as a child many people would spit at him when they used to see him walk on the streets of his hometown of Tuli Bana. His mother “still cries” when she looks at him but his main worry now is to find a job in order to provide for his family. “It would make me so proud, but no one will give me a chance. I have to beg and hope people take pick muslef up and get on with it,” Latif told The Sun.

Last week, the FDA recalled all jars of Trader Joe’s Valencia Salted Peanut Butter made with Sea Salt, pulling the product of Trader Joe’s shelves due to a possible link to salmonella illnesses reported in 19 states. Sunland, Inc., the Portales, New Mexico-based company that manufactures the Trader Joe’s peanut butter, has since expanded its recall to over 100 products with nuts and seeds made on the same manufacturing line. The recall now includes almond butter, cashew butter, tahini, and blanched and roasted peanut products.

Sunland Inc. is recalling the products it made between May 1, 2012 and September 24, 2012 and issued a statement to inform its clients to return their products and get a full refund. More than a dozen companies have been affected by Sunland’s recall, including Traget, Stop and Shop Supermarket company.

Since the FDA issued a recall no new salmonella outbreak has been reported. Prior to the recall, 30 people reportedly contracted salmonella in 19 US states over a three month period.

The recall was made by New Mexico-based Sunland Inc. which now ordered the recall also for other products, other than the peanut butter, that are sold at Whole Foods and Target like: ice cream, chocolate products, and even cracker snacks. The recall has now been expanded to 101 products and more products made with Sunland ingredients are likely to be recalled soon.

The first link over a possible salmonella contamination is linked to Trader Joe’s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter, which is produced by Sunland Inc., which distributes its products to the main groceries in the US.

This is what the Center for Disease Control and Prevetion (CDC) reports: “There are now 30 illnesses in 19 states that can be traced to the Trader Joe’s peanut butter. No other foods have been linked to the illnesses, but Sunland recalled other products manufactured on the same equipment as the Trader Joe’s product.”

The sharp birth fall off was between the “2 to 3 percent” while the decline in 2011 only 1 percent suggesting that the “effect of the recession is slowly coming to an end,” said Carl Haub, a senior demographer. The AP reports:

According to the study, which examined “the genetic makeup of 51 children” found that in 55 percent of the cases no correlation was found between the child’s disability and the parents’ genes.

Anita Rauch, one of the lead authors of the study said that chances to father a second child with mental disabilities was “estimated at eight percent” at the most. However, the chances of fathering a second mentally disabled child dropped dramatically if the the cause of the random mutation was known.

Researchers also explained that disabilities cannot be inherited because if they were people would be “less likely to have children.” The study was published online by the journal Lancet.

The warning against painkillers is part of a survey published by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence’s (NICE) on how to treat headaches and it is claimed that medication overuse can lead to headaches similar to the more common migraines. According to the data, 1-2% of people who use painkillers suffer from the condition but it is not known yet how the medication can affect the users’ brains.

People who suffer from the condition are recommended to resort to alternative medications such as acupuncture to treat their frequent migraines.

According to Manjit Matharu, a neurologist who took part in the research, using painkillers for up to 15 days a month can trigger painkiller-induced headaches. “The figures in terms of the number of people who have medication overuse headache are one in 50, so that is approximately a million people who have headaches on a daily or near daily basis because they’re using painkillers,” Matharu told the BBC.

The outcome of the study was that sexually aroused women found sex related tasks way less disgusting than others, but not only sex related tasks, they also found no sex-related tasks less disgusting.

Also to be noted: “the study hold implications for treating sexual dysfunction in women. It’s quite possible that women who find sex unpleasurable or gross may either not be sufficiently sexually aroused, or that their induced disgust reduction response is somehow impaired.”

For example if two different cultures far away from each other used the same remedy this probably means that the remedy actually worked, and so the plants had real pain-killing abilities, and the same plant family can produce bioactive compounds.

On the other hand distance can also be a problem, because maybe different cultures couldn’t use the same plant, as stated: “The disparate regions that have experienced limited cultural contact are floristically disparate too, so different cultures will not be exposed to the same species, genera, or even families.”

It’s also to be noted that:

 ”More than 80% of plant species have not been investigated for bioactivity and methods to distinguish those plants most likely to be bioactive when selecting species for further testing are needed, the finding that medicinal plant use shows strong phylogenetic clustering indicates targeting close relatives of plants with known bioactivity or phylogenetic medicinal hotspots identified as hot nodes is a good strategy for focused screening.”

Lee Gettler digged deeper into the matter to find out that a father who sleeps with his child on the same surface has a even lower nighttime testosterone than those who sleep in the same room, and both of them have lower testosterone than those who sleep in different rooms, Gettler reached such conclusion after having tested 362 fathers, between the age of 25 and 26 for a length of time of 4-5 years.

“Human fathers’ physiology has the capacity to respond to children. Our prior research has shown that when men become fathers, their testosterone decreases, sometimes dramatically, and that those who spend the most time in hands-on care — playing with their children, feeding them or reading to them — had lower testosterone. These new results complement the original research by taking it one step further, showing that nighttime closeness or proximity between fathers and their kids has effects on men’s biology, and it appears to be independent of what they are doing during the day. “There are so many intriguing possibilities here for future research: Why do fathers have lower testosterone when they sleep very close to their children? Does it reflect human fathers’ roles in our evolutionary past? How much do fathers vary in their nighttime care when their kids are close by? How does co-sleeping change fathers’ sleep architecture when we know that co-sleeping increases mothers’ arousals and mothers sync to their infants’ sleep patterns.”

A study claimed that the reason why people don’t manage to stick to their diet is memory, which is contained in a set of traits researchers have linked to how well people manage to respect their diets. What makes us fall into temptation is known as executive function.

The executive function is the one that deals with how we prioritize things, and what things to give more importance to, but it also includes prospective memory, which is the one that reminds us to stick to tasks and complete them. Those who have poor prospective memory tend to forget things and plans, and in the diet case they forget they are on a diet.

This is what Julia Allan, health psychologist, said: ‘Prospective memory keeps you on track. Every time you are offered something to eat, you have to bring to mind that you are on a diet.’

You might think that mushrooms are closer to plants, they don’t move nor they reproduce sexually, though you might be surprise to know there are some reasons why we can say that awkward expression might be partially true. Following io9.com explains where mushrooms come from and how they developed:

“It was originally thought that land-based life forms came from the many different types of algae floating around the sea. Now it looks like first life hopped to fresh water and the original land-based life came from only one type of algae in that fresh water. This means that we’re more closely related to anything on land than water-based algae – even the stuff that’s evolved symbiotically with us and is swimming around our guts right now.”

So pretty much fungi evolved form of the many algae that arrived to the land, in particular one called chlorophyll, which is pretty much one algal common ancestor. So why are we similiar? Both us and mushrooms managed to get out of the photosynthesis process before we became what we are now. Mushrooms are formed by chitin, which is also found in insects but not plants, in some ways mushrooms contain more proteins that animals are most likely to contain and plants not. One of this it’s called lanosterol, which plants don’t have, but animals do. So they have more in common with us rather than plants.

Hancock Country Supervisor that there is a bad smell due to the rats and some of them are starting to bust. Though this could be seen as something beneficial to the Gulf Coast, where the rats are an invasive species.

However when the image change was faster, both sexes were less able to resolve the images over all bar widths. The researchers also noted that, overall, the men were better able to resolve more rapidly changing images that were closer together than the women.”

But the black tetra is native to South America and likely to be happy making a splash in the inland waterways of South Florida and Latin America. In South Florida, the modified black tetras could upset an environment already burdened with 30 types of nonnative fish. In South America, they could mean an undesirable interference in natural biodiversity. “My worry is that they’ll be such a novelty that they will be imported back to [South America] and kids will let them go and they’ll start interbreeding with fish whose genomes are very similar,” said Barry Chernoff, a freshwater fish biologist and chair of the environmental studies program at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. “We would see the spreading of the fluorescent coral gene in the native fish.”

A study has been carried out, and it came out that all this organic food is just a myth. Researchers at Stanford university showed that organic food does not contain more vitamins or nutrients than standard food, this study can have a great impact on the $27 billion organic food industry. On the positive side industry also discovered that organic food does have lower levels of pesticides both in fruit and vegetables.

Researchers Dena Bravata, Crystal Smith-Spangler analyzed 240 studies, in which there were food trials lasting from 2 days to 2 years, as an outcome the result of such analysis showed no differences between the health of those eating organic food and those eating normal food.

They also noticed: “They found little significant difference in the vitamin content of organic products, with only one nutrient, phosphorus, appearing in organic foods at significantly higher rates (which isn’t really an issue considering how few people suffer from phosphorus deficiencies). In addition, the researchers found no difference in protein or fat content between organic and conventional milk — though they did find evidence that organic milk may contain considerably higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids (which is quite significant from a health perspective).”

UC Davis researchers said about  scrub jays mourning habits: “When the birds were fooled into thinking a predator had arrived, by being exposed to a mounted owl, they also gathered together and made a series of alarm calls. They also swooped down at the supposed predator, to scare it off. But the jays never swooped at the body of a dead bird. The birds also occasionally mobbed the stuffed jays; a behaviour they are known to do in the wild when they attack competitors or sick birds. The fact that the jays didn’t react to the wooden objects shows that it is not the novelty of a dead bird appearing that triggers the reaction. The results show that “without witnessing the struggle and manner of death”, the researchers write, the jays see the presence of a dead bird as information to be publicly shared, just as they do the presence of a predator.”

The first day after we landed, I had to come to work at 1am in the middle of the night right after we landed. That was a little bit jarring, because I was pretty much up for a day and a half. But then you kind of get into it. It’s actually really exciting to be here and working on this mission, so that overcomes a lot of the tiredness and you’re just running on adrenaline. Not overdoing how cool it is helps keep you awake. So it hasn’t been too bad in my opinion. And different people handle it in different ways. There’s lots of caffeine and melatonin and things like that.”

How do they manage to do so? Researchers who worked at MIT played again and again an audio reminder of things the rat did the previous day. This way they proved that memory gets stronger in their sleep, but it also influences the content of their dreams. Neuroscientist Matt Wilson, working at MIT, got to this point by analysing how brain’s hippocampus works, and all the events encoded in its memory. They figured out that brain’s hippocampus replays events happened during the day while we sleep, and this process is very important, because it helps brain consolidation.

Though they already knew this all, what they did not know was if the enviroment could influence how memory works and what we think during our sleep. So Wilson decided to gather a group or rats and lead an experiment. First he taught the rats how to run through a maze using two audio cues, and then he noticed that rats quickly learnt that those recordings were very useful, because they led them to food and rewards. The night Wilson recorded rat’s brain activity and found out that thanks to the recordings they were thinking about the maze experience.

Futhermore, as stated: “when the researchers played the audio cues from the experiment, they noticed a very interesting thing: the rats would dream about the section of the maze previously associated with the audio cue. The experiment demonstrated that the content of a rat’s dream can be biased by re-activating certain memories while they’re asleep”

It increases their risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, orthopedic problems and a whole bunch of other health problems. But what this study in the journal Pediatrics is talking about is different: it’s talking about effects on the brain. Researchers looked at 49 adolescents with metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome, a consequence of obesity, is the triad of insulin resistance (pre-diabetes or diabetes), high blood pressure and high blood lipids. The researchers compared the adolescents with 62 adolescents who had the same socioeconomic background but didn’t have metabolic syndrome.

“Lower cognitive performance and reductions in brain structural integrity among adolescents with metabolic syndrome [suggests] that even relatively short-term impairment in metabolism, in the absence of vascular disease, may give rise to brain complications,” the study authors wrote.

“There are huge numbers of people out there who have problems with their weight,” study co-author Dr. Antonio Convit, professor of psychiatry and medicine at NYU School of Medicine, said in a statement. “As yet, there has been very little information available about what happens to the brain in the setting of obesity and metabolic syndrome in children.”
