BUCHAREST, Romania – Romania’s newly appointed prime minister has begun talks to form a new government after the cabinet of Emil Boc collapsed following protests over austerity meassures and declining living standards.

Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, the former head of Romania’s foreign intelligence service, was appointed by President Traian Basescu late Monday to lead a new government.

On Tuesday Ungureanu was holding talks with coalition parties that had formed the previous government. The parties have a majority in the country’s Parliament, and are likely to approve the new government. The opposition is currently boycotting Parliament.

Romanian media are reporting that many of the ministers of Boc’s Cabinet, which collapsed on Monday, will retain their previous jobs.<
