OSAKA, Japan – A marketing team of an Osaka department store came up with an advertising idea that forced them to apologize after plastering their windows with “F***in Sale” banners. The Galerie shop displayed the posters all over its windows “to emphasize just how good their January sale was.”
The slogan played on a Japanese word, fukubukuro – lucky bags – “relating to the Japanese New Year retail custom of selling off discounted unwanted stock from the previous year in big grab bags,” reports The Daily Mail. The pun was lost on English speaking visitors.
